Access Information On-Site
For direct access to the most information, visiting in person is the most fruitful. Researchers may use all material in the Research Room in this non-circulating Library. Staff members retrieve all other library & archival collections from other storage areas for patron use.
Ask staff for guidance. Any in-depth requests require an interview to explore what is needed. An appointment is required with archival personnel so collections resources can be discussed and selected.
Currently a manual card catalogue is used to access information on the holdings. The dictionary card catalog is searchable by author, title and subject. In addition there are many finding aids and guide files which guide the researcher quickly to desired information on the archival and manuscript collections, increasing efficiency and improving access.
We are increasing the level of technology used in the Dept. to increase speed of information access and product delivery. A database is currently used by staff to search the Erie City Building Inspector’s Plans & Drawings Collection of blueprints which span 1912-2004. Data on 3,900 plans may be searched. Researchers interested in looking at the plans then place a request with staff. The plans are retrieved for viewing. Copies of facsimiles may be ordered. Normal turnaround time is 2-3 days.
The Library & Archives will soon begin to add holdings to user-friendly PAST PERFECT software with the eventual goal of having user stations on site for patrons to use directly. The PAST PERFECT database creates an integrated Local Area Network of information on objects (3-d) and archival material (2-d) which can be searched at the same time.
