The
Journal of Erie Studies: On The Web
Focus
of the Journal of Erie Studies:
Work is happening behind the scenes for
The Journal of Erie Studies to go on line
this year. After thirty-one years of publishing
the print issue every fall and spring Erie
County Historical Society has joined with
Edinboro University of Pennsylvania to publish
on-line.
The
electronic version of The Journal of Erie
Studies will produce articles and other
materials separate from the print version
of The Journal of Erie Studies. Plans include
tables of contents of past issues, an expanded
index, and other print products.
The
Journal of Erie Studies Online, when launched,
will be available wherever an Internet connection
can be made. Viewers of this homepage may
begin doing research on Erie area historical
topics remote from libraries and the parent
institution. Links to other homepages, particularly
that of the Erie County Historical Society,
will direct the interested student to further
local historical information. The Erie County
Historical Society is located in the Erie
County History Center in Erie's historic
commercial district. Edinboro University
of Pennsylvania is located at the opposite
end of Erie County, in Edinboro, Pennsylvania.
Role
of the History Department at Edinboro University
of Pennsylvania:
Faculty in the Department of History at
Edinboro University of Pennsylvania have
long collaborated with the Erie County Historical
Society and Museums in a variety of ways.
Many faculty articles and research monographs
have been published in the "Journal"
over the years, and faculty have served
in the capacity of readers and editorial
assistants as the need arose. History faculty
have referred both graduate and undergraduate
students to the Society for internships
and federal work- study positions related
to a variety of projects over the years.
In
the spring and summer of 2000, meetings
were held between various personnel of the
Society and the University to discuss possibilities
for expanded collaboration. In consequence,
Edinboro University sponsored the fall 2000
edition of the "Journal" in terms
of both funding and content. Three articles
were authored by History faculty, and a
fourth, on the history of Edinboro University
and its pivotal role in the region, was
written by David Obringer, University Archivist.
Another outcome of the aforementioned meetings
was an agreement to collaborate on a proposal
for an electronic version of the "Journal,"
initially as a pilot project, with future
electronic editions dependent upon reception
and clarification of their relationship
to the print editions. Beginning in February
2002, a committee of Society and University
personnel met regularly to work out the
details of the pilot edition. This project
is still in development but progressing
nicely.
