OLIVER HAZARD PERRY FERGUSON IN ATLANTA
111th Regiment, PA Volunteers Camp
in the City of Atlanta,
Sept. 15, 1864
Dear Wife &
Children--
We are having
a good time just now; the 111th doing
Provost duty in the City. We are encamped
in the center of the city in one of
the finest parks just in front of
the largest hotel in town--the Trent
House.
We have a beauty
of a camp in as much as we had the
privilege of tearing down as many
sheds, barns and houses as we wanted,
to fix the camp up. This was done
by General ShermanÕs order.
He is the man for me. He does not
care a cent for any body. He wants
his army to be comfortable if they
have to tear the city all down....
Sherman has
ordered all whose head of household
is in the southern army or in the
lines to leave the city within ten
days and who will take the oath of
allegence may go North in this time.
There is a great many going south.
It is a Sorrowful sight to see the
old ladies who has to walk with a
cane bundle up and leave their homes
but such is the effects of Session
and they must stand. Some of the younger
ladies say they are glad to go (but
I know they lie)....
I am ever your
loving husband, OHP Ferguson.
