The
Bauschard Collection contains many
family photographs and images of local
scenes with broad appeal. The images
were kept together because there is
more meaning and context for them
as a part the collection rather than
a separate item. |
More
Photo Archives Collections:
Photographs
and negatives may be located in collections
of family, organizations and businesses,
in addition to special photographic
collections or the photograph vertical
file. Archival processing encourages
keeping the context, ie. related materials,
together if more meaning is derived
from doing so. Sometimes the special
quality/format, ie. glassplate negative,
does not allow this.

United
Oil Manufacturing Company
United
Oil Manufacturing Company is another
example. The Company was founded in
Erie, PA in 1908 by Gustave J. Gebhardt
(1857-1943), a German immigrant. The
United Oil Manufacturing Company Collection
is important for its focus on the
growth of the oil and gasoline industries
in the City of Erie, Erie County and
the region. Oils and greases were
originally produced for use in Erie's
factories and foundries.
The
automobile industry provided a new
need for oils, greases and gasoline.
This 21 box collection includes business
records and 845 photographs, negatives
and slides.

| Collections
which document organizations are usually
rich with photographs which capture
group activity. The Erie
Yacht Club Archives is one
excellent example.
Members
continue to produce exhibits to promote
the history of the club, using images
from their Archives, now at the History
Center. Archives volunteers Claire
Nichols and Karen Illig and others
support the care of these interesting
images and documents which preserve
our maritime heritage. |
