Ladies
on Parade (Exhibit)
March 1st – September
28th
At the Watson-Curtze Mansion
What do Sarah Reed, Laura Sanford,
Elizabeth Burleigh, Charlotte Elizabeth
Battles and Annie Scott Strong have
in common? They are just a few of
the incredible women who have called
Erie home. Ladies on Parade presents
the stories of these amazing women
and several others.
The exhibit also features the museum’s
fashion collection. It takes visitors
from decade to decade, showcasing
the best in women’s apparel
and accessories.
We offer a sneak peek at…
Erie’s
Grand Lady
Sarah A.
Reed was born in 1838 - the granddaughter
of the city’s earliest female
settler, Hannah Reed! An educated
woman, Ms. Reed spent much of her
life improving the social services
and compassion of the City of Erie.
Perhaps her single greatest accomplishment
took place in October of 1871, when
Ms. Reed worked with several other
Erie women to form the first welfare
agency in Erie. She served as the
President of “The Erie Association
for Improving the Conditions of the
Poor and a Home for the Friendless”
for 44 years. Ms. Reed also conducted
Sunday school classes for the orphans
at the Home. Years later she would
write children’s books and dedicate
them to her “little flock.”
In total, Ms. Reed was involved in
more than 25 different clubs and societies,
which she remained active in until
her death in 1934. Ms. Reed dedicated
96 years to the Erie community.

Children's
books flourished during the nineteenth
century; writers, artists and publishers
were all eager to encourage, and profit
from, an ever-growing market for lively,
attractively illustrated reading material.
At the
beginning of the 19th century most
children's literature had a strong
moral message, but by the 1880s there
was a wide range of juvenile magazines,
and fiction, in the form of action-packed
tales of adventure and irreverent
school stories, becoming part of every
child's experience.
Tickets: $12.00
Adult, $10.00 Senior, $8.00 Member
