February 2nd African American Families of Erie
Documentation Project

Saturday, February 2nd

History Center, 419 State Street

ECHS needs your help in preserving the community’s past and present. You are invited to share your family stories and personal photograph collections February 2nd at the History Center. Society staff and interns are prepared to scan photographs and record oral histories on-site – share your stories and enjoy light refreshments while you wait. Information and images collected will become a permanent part of the archives and be used in the sixth installment of the Ethnic Erie Project…The African American Experience, which opens early fall 2008.

   
February 9th Civil War History Lives
at the Cashier’s House

Saturday, February 9th
11:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
History Center, 419 State Street


In celebration of Black History Month and President’s Day the Harry T. Burleigh Society and the 111Th P.V.I. Civil War re-enactors join forces to present LIVING history at the Cashier’s House. Dramatic readings, music and singing, and a series of vignettes bring the Civil War era to life.

You'll be amazed and inspired by the stories of the Waters and Burleigh families as Rev. Adrianne Rush interprets Elizabeth Waters Burleigh, the mother of Harry T. Burleigh. Be a part of an Abolitionist meeting led by Henry Catlin, portrayed by David Sturtevant. Catlin was a Euro-American hero who risked his comfortable and successful life for the cause of freedom. Hear how he marched down the streets of Erie, arm-in-arm with Frederick Douglass. Admission is $4 Adult, $3 Senior, $2 Child.

Valentine Dinner Under the Stars

at the Erie Planetarium, 356 West Sixth Street

Enjoy dinner under the stars this Valentines Day at the Erie Planetarium. Good food, good music and the most unique setting under the sun.

Ticket cost is $50.00 per couple, which includes a dinner selection of Chicken Cordon Bleu, Beef Marsala, or Creamy Artichoke & Spinach Cod.

Enjoy great food, the romantic atmosphere of one of Erie's best preserved Victorian landmarks, and a special performance by SoMar Dance Works entitled "Sex, Solitude & a Happy Ending" - a romantic, humorous, "appropriate for the entire family" performance. February 23rd Journey from Jerusalem
Book Discussion & Tea

Join us while local historian Sarah Thompson discusses her 1995 publication Journey from Jerusalem: 200 years of Erie’s African American History. Journey is recognized as the most comprehensive history of Erie’s African American community to date. It presents stories of the Underground Railroad, inspiring athletes, unforgettable musicians and more.
